Introduction
Welcome to English Stride, an English learning app and blog about the English language. We care about your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you read our articles, practise with our exercises and play our games, how we use it, and the choices you have.
By using English Stride, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
Information We Collect
Information you provide
- Account information: username, email address and password (stored in hashed form by our authentication provider). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google.
- Learning activity: your answers, scores, progress, in-game tokens and results in exercises such as Word Translation, Sentences Constructor, Fill Gaps, Pronunciation and the multiplayer Word Translation Game.
- Comments and messages: comments you post on blog articles and messages you send us through the contact form or by email.
Voice recordings
The Pronunciation exercise asks for access to your microphone. Your recording is sent to a speech recognition service only to transcribe what you said and check your pronunciation. We do not store your recordings or use them for any other purpose. You can refuse microphone access at any time in your browser settings; the rest of the app will keep working.
Information collected automatically
- Usage and device data: pages visited, time spent, browser type, device type, referring URL and approximate location based on your IP address, collected through server logs and privacy-friendly analytics.
- Cookies and local storage: used to keep you signed in and to remember preferences, such as whether phonetic transcription (IPA) is shown.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Create and manage your account and let you sign in
- Save your learning progress, scores and tokens
- Run the real-time multiplayer game, including showing your username to other players in the same room
- Check your pronunciation in speaking exercises
- Publish your comments on blog articles
- Understand which articles and exercises are most useful so we can improve them
- Send service emails, such as account confirmation and password resets
- Answer your questions and feedback
- Keep the service safe and prevent abuse
We do not send marketing emails without your consent, and we do not sell your personal information.
What Other Users Can See
- Your username and score are visible to other players in multiplayer games.
- Comments you post on articles are public, together with your username.
Your email address is never shown to other users.
Service Providers
We rely on trusted third parties to run English Stride. They process data only on our behalf:
- Supabase — database, authentication and real-time game features
- Google — sign-in with a Google account (optional)
- Vercel — website hosting, analytics and performance monitoring
- Hugging Face — speech recognition for pronunciation exercises
- YouTube — some video exercises and articles embed YouTube videos. When you play them, YouTube may set its own cookies under Google's Privacy Policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users and service.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored with Supabase (PostgreSQL). We use row-level security so that your personal data is available only to you and to authorised system processes. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Data Retention
We keep your account data and learning progress while your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep it by law. Public comments may be deleted or anonymised. Voice recordings are not retained.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and associated data
- Export your data
- Object to or restrict how we process your data
- Withdraw consent at any time

Children's Privacy
English Stride is intended for learners aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it. Learners between 13 and 18 should use the service with the permission of a parent or guardian.
Third-Party Links
Our articles may link to dictionaries, videos and other external resources. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those websites.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app and blog grow. We will post the new version on this page and update the date below. Significant changes will be announced on the website.
